Diros OWL® RF Range Review

The range of Diros OWL® products all work in coherence to provide effective Radiofrequencey treatment in order to combat chronic pain through the innovative use of Radiofrequency Lesioning.

Founded in 1983, Diros Technology Inc. are the designers and manufacturers of the innovative OWL® RF range of Radiofrequency products for Neurosurgery and Pain Management. The OWL® brand was established back in 1969 and has since been continually researched and advanced byDiros Technology Inc. to create a truly innovative Radiofrequency pain management system for patients suffering with chronic pain relating to Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacroiliac and much more.

How Diros OWL® RF Technology Works

Once undergoing surgery, the OWL® Radiofrequency Generator emits heat lesions to the probes which are then inserted via a Cannulae to sensory fibers where the pain is being felt and forms a lesion. This lesion then blocks the pain signals from reaching the brain, in turn reducing the sensation of pain. This technique doesn’t ‘heal’ the pain, it simply ‘masks’ the pain, and is why this form of treatment is only recommended to patients suffering from chronic pain who have tried all other options (medication etc) with little success.

Each product has a specific purpose in order to generate radiofrequency energy into heat in order to form a lesion and stops the nerve from carrying pain signals to the brain.

Diros Owl RF Lesion Generator - Review

RF Lesion Generator

The entire treatment process of radiofrequency lesioning starts at the generator. This device emits precise radiofrequency signals for nerve stimulation and lesion generation in the form of heat. Built to be safe, accurate and easy to use with a built in impedance monitor,  the surgeon is able to provide safe and effective delivery of Continuous or Pulsed Radiofrequency. This can be emitted in Monopolar, Bipolar or QuadrapolarTM form (with use of the MLA 4) meaning the surgeon can opt to use a single electrode with a forceps design, a probe electrode and return pad to form a complete electrical current circuit or utilise all 4 probes for shorter lesioning time.

Diros Owl MLA-4 Review

Multilesion Adapter (MLA-4)

The adapter plugs into the Generator and features a unique design which allows it to independently control up to four RF Probes at one time. It’s simple, easy to use design features a user true plug and play system, a simplified probe ID and Probe Management System and built in visible/invisible safety parameter checking technology. It has the ability to create four lesions simultaneously allowing the user to create a quadrapolar strip lesion approx 45mm long and 11mm wide, which means you only have a 6 minutes lesion time instead of 22 minutes. The Multilesion adapter is fully compatible with the OWL URF-3AP RF Generator and includes 4 auto/manual extended ramps.

RF Probes

The probes then plug into the MLA-4 Adapter and feature a 4 foot long cable attached to the probe in order to effectively transmit the radiofrequency generated from the Generator. These are designed to be disposable so they are easy to use, eliminate sterilisation time and costs, and to eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination. Each probe is also colour coded according to its length and features: 5 cm (red), 10 cm (blue), 15 cm (yellow), and 20cm(brown or black).

The RF Probes are then inserted into the RF Cannulae which has a rigid, smooth cannula design to allow it to give an accurate placement for the cannula bare tip. Made from a durable grade stainless steel, this cannulas is available in a number of different sizes ranging from 22 gauge to 16 gauge with colour coded identification. It has a number of configurations to suit every users need, variations include: Sharp Straight, Sharp Curved, Blunt Straight and Blunt Curved. Each Cannulae is individually sterilised and packaged in boxes of 10 pieces and are to be used in conjunction with the corresponding RF Probes and the Diros OWL RF Probes (re-usable or disposable). Overall, The Diros OWL® RF Cannulae can decrease cost and eliminate the risk of cross-contamination.
