What is Nerve Stimulation?

Nerve Stimulation Technology (also knows as Peripheral Nerve Stimulation) involves surgery that places a small electrical device next to one of the peripheral nerves. The electrode then delivers a rapid electrical pulse to the affected area sending a mild tingle sensation to the patient. There is normally a testing period (trial) where the electrode is connected to an external device and if successful, a small generator will be permanently implanted into the patient’s body. The patient is then able to control stimulation by turning the device on and off and adjusting the levels of stimulation if needed.

Polar Medical specialise in the supply of the Neurimpulse Peripheral Nerve Stimulation System which features a generator device which is implanted into the area causing the pain and then sends electrical signals to nerve causing the discomfort. These electrical signals run through the nerves and to the brain, blocking the sensation of pain and replacing it with a pleasant feeling – from experience, patients have reported this feels like a “light massage” and a “light tingling sensation”. The stimulation intensity can be personally adjusted by the patient via a remote control handset and they can even set different strengths of stimulation for different times of the day – so it’s a very customisable system.

How Nerve Stimulation Works

Nerve Stimulation works by actively sending an electrical pulse to one of the peripheral nerves creating the pain sensation, effectively blocking and replacing it with a more manageable light tingling sensation. The Benefits of Nerve Stimulation Treatment are as follows:

With Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, the device can be placed on a trial basis before it is implanted which helps ensure that the right area received the pain-relieving stimulation.

If successful, peripheral nerve stimulation treatment can significantly reduce and sometimes completely eliminate pain all together, giving the patient a better quality of life.

Oral Medication

Due to the high success rate of Peripheral Nerve Treatment, many patients manage to reduce or completely elimination their use of drug medication.
