What is Spinal Cord Stimulation?

Spinal Cord Stimulation is a type of implantable Neuromodulation device that uses electrical signals to select areas of the spinal cord for the treatment of certain chronic pain conditions.

There are two stages to a Spinal Cord Stimulation procedure, the trial stage followed by a final implantation stage. At the trial stage, a thin, flexible wire is placed in the area near the spine, using a special needle. The wires are then connected to an external wireless generator device that’s secured to your back during the trial. Once set up, the patient will then spend anywhere from 1 – 2 weeks trialling the system to see if it benefits them. If the patient feels like the pain has significantly improved during the trial a final permanent implantation will be arranged.

Research has shown that between five and seven out of ten cases found the therapy to significantly reduce pain for chronic conditions such as neuropathic (nerve) pain, failed back surgery syndrome and complex regional pain syndrome. It is advised however that spinal cord stimulation should only be used for patients who have severe chronic pain that is highly effecting and limiting everyday life and those who have already tried all reasonable therapies including (but not limited to) physiotherapy and painkiller medication.

How Spinal Cord Stimulation Works

Spinal Cord Stimulation works by by implanting a small device (similar to a pacemaker) to the area of the nerves causing the pain signals. This small implant delivers electrical pulse signals through carefully placed leads to the spinal cord to override the pain sensation.

Stag 1. Trial

During the trial stage a thin lead will be placed into the area near the spine and an external wireless generator device will be secured to the back of the patient.

Stag 1. Testing

The patient will spend approximately 1-2 weeks testing the device to see if it improves or even eliminates the pain all together. If successful the patient will then be recommended to move to Stage 2.

Stage 2. Implantation

If the patient feels like the pain has significantly improved during the trial period, a final permanent implantation procedure will be arranged.
